Green Homes Certificate

The Institute for the Built Environment has created a program focused on sustainable residential building strategies and tools, including the major rating systems: LEED-Homes®, Built Green, and ENERGY STAR.

Our Green Homes Certificate Program targets homebuilders, interior and landscape designers, architects, homeowners, energy engineers, subcontractors, real estate professionals, developers, lenders, appraisers, and building inspectors—anyone interested in green home construction and remodeling.

Graduates will gain a working knowledge of green building from basic principles to an overview of the many disciplines involved. Leading experts in the field of green residential building will be brought in to teach the course.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

Our 13-week Green Homes Certificate Program includes a Saturday site visit and provides a comprehensive overview of this fast growing, dynamic field. Coursework focuses on the following topics in green residential building, new construction and remodeling:

  • Site and Home Design
  • Energy-Efficient Envelope
  • High Performance HVAC systems for new, remodeled and existing homes
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Active Renewable Energy Systems
  • Home Performance Testing Demonstrations
  • Sustainable, Healthy Building and Finish Materials
  • Natural Home Building Techniques
  • Construction Waste Recycling, Deconstruction, Remodeling
  • Economics of Green Homes
  • Green Rating Systems: LEED-Homes, Built Green, ENERGY STAR

FACULTY

Paul Kriescher is the lead instructor of the Green Homes Certificate Program. He is the principal of Lightly Treading Energy & Design, a company that works to better the energy efficiency, safety, environmental impact, and comfort of homes and small commercial buildings. He is a board member of the Energy Efficient Business Coalition—Colorado Chapter, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver's Plan Review committee, the Advisory Board of the Colorado Earth Expo, and the Denver Home Builders Association's Energy & Environmental Affairs committee.

Brian Dunbar is program director, co-developer of the curriculum and instructor for the Green Homes Certificate Program. He is a professor in the Department of Construction Management at Colorado State University, and he is the Director of the Institute for the Built Environment (IBE), coordinating the graduate emphasis in Sustainable Building and researching healthy, sustainable construction practices. An internationally recognized champion of green building, Brian is a LEED-NC and LEED-CI Accredited Professional and is a national faculty member with U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
