Spring 2010
Thursday evenings
March 4 - May 27, 2010
CSU Loveland Learning Center
The Green Building Certificate Program provides comprehensive and practical knowledge for sustainable building design within the context of LEEDŽ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the nationwide rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. Each week the course is taught by different industry experts who share their cutting-edge knowledge about topics ranging from sustainable sites to building commissioning.
As an accelerated evening program, this 12-week course was created to fulfill the growing need for specially trained professionals who are able to adapt to a changing industry and culture. The course typically attracts working professionals who need critical knowledge about emerging green building practices in commercial building, and who wish to enhance their careers. Many of our students go on to take the LEED® Associates exam after completing the course.
Individuals from the following professions tend to benefit the most from the program:
- Design professionals – architects, engineers, planners, and
interior
designers
- Contractors and builders
- Real estate industry professionals
- Facility and property managers
- Building owners and developers
WHAT THIS PROGRAM WILL DO FOR YOU:
-
Introduce you to environmentally sustainable building practices and strategies from the Rocky Mountain region’s leading university in green design and construction education.
-
Provide guidance integrating your environmental interests with potential career opportunities.
-
Connect you with regional experts and industry professionals in green building.
-
Enhance your skills in a convenient, one-evening per week classroom setting.

Provide an exciting forum in which to purchase and earn 4.2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
- Prepare you to be ready for the emerging green economy.
CURRICULUM
The program gives students extensive exposure to the fast-growing, dynamic field of green building. Coursework focuses on the following topics:
- Sustainable site development
- Environmentally smart building and finish materials
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy systems
- Water use and conservation
- Daylighting and natural ventilation
- Integrated building and energy systems
- Deconstruction, recycling, and construction waste
- Building commissioning
- Economics of green building and life cycle costing
- LEEDŽ Rating System and LEEDŽ accreditation exam preparation
- Indoor environmental quality
Approximately 50% of the course focuses on commercial buildings, 50% applies to all aspects of the built environment. In addition, students participate in an interactive design charrette, which facilitates peer-to-peer learning, and selected students have the opportunity to showcase a green building research project.
The Green Building Certificate Program contains some content that is related to residential construction, but is not the primary focus. For those looking specifically for residential green building strategies our Green Homes Certificate Program may be more appropriate.
