The IBE has created a program focused on sustainable building tools and strategies, including LEED®, the nationwide rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. Our Green Building Certificate Program is an on-campus, accelerated evening program providing critical knowledge about emerging practices in commercial and residential building.

This certificate responds to the growing need for specially trained professionals who are able to adapt to a changing industry and culture. If you work in the design and construction industries and are seeking to enhance your career, this certificate can greatly increase your competency and ability to contribute, collaborate, and advance. Industry-related audiences who benefit from this certificate include:

  • Design professionals – architects, engineers, planners, and interior
    designers
  • Contractors and builders
  • Building officials
  • Facility managers and stakeholders
  • Building owners and developers

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

Our 12-week Green Building Certificate provides a comprehensive overview of this fast-growing, dynamic field. Approximately 20% of the course addresses residential topics, 40% commercial/institutional, and the remainder applies to all aspects of the built environment.

Coursework focuses on the following topics in green building:

  • Sustainable site development
  • Environmentally smart building and finish materials
  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy systems
  • Water use and conservation
  • Daylighting and natural ventilation
  • Integrated building and energy systems
  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Deconstruction, recycling, and construction waste
  • Building commissioning
  • Economics of green building and life cycle costing
  • LEED® Rating System and LEED® Accreditation exam preparation

In addition, participants experience an interactive design charrette and
have the opportunity to showcase a green building project. Peer learning is
integrated into the certificate program.

Many of our students successfully pass the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Professional Accreditation exam soon after completing this Certificate Program.

TEACHING FACULTY

  • Brian Dunbar is the lead instructor of the Green Building Certificate Program. He is the Director of the CSU Institute for the Built Environment (IBE), coordinating the graduate emphasis in Sustainable Building and researching healthy, sustainable buildings. Brian is a LEED 2.0 and 2.1 Accredited Professional and is a national faculty member with U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Guest instructors include other IBE faculty and some of the top green building
